We pursue several different lines of research in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics in the broad sense. In some cases the activities combine experimental, theoretical, and computational work. For example, the research on interactions involving atoms, molecules, and clusters at DESIREE and other facilities, is complemented by model developments and computations.

The experimental research group (Henrik Cederquist, Henning Schmidt, Sven Mannervik, Henning Zettergren with postdocs and PhD students) is pursuing research in atomic collision physics dealing with interactions involving atomic ions in low and high charge states, molecular ions such as fullerenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biomolecules, and clusters.  The research is mainly experimental, but we do also develop models for charge and energy flow processes, and carry out molecular structure calculations to guide the interpretations of the experimental results (more information can be found here). 

The experiments are performed at the DESIREE facility at Stockholm University, at Aarhus University in Denmark, and at the ARIBE (CIMAP) facility in Caen, France. We are members of the COST action XLIC starting in June 2013 and the European Associated Laboratory DYNAMO together with CIMAP Caen (experiment) and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (theory).      



The main activity of the group during the coming years will be centred around the new DESIREE facility. DESIREE stands for Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, which as the name suggests consists of two storage rings with a common merging section for studies of ion-ion collisions down to the 10 meV energy range. Experiments at the DESIREE facility may include studies of fundamental inherent properties of small and complex ions and their reactions, measurements of reaction rate coefficients and cross sections for astrophysical applications, applications for atmospheric science and for bio-molecular physics including radiation damage experiments. The whole ring complex is cooled by cryogenerators down to the 10 Kelvin range, which allows for long time storage and laser interaction experiments with internally cold ions. We also use a standalone beam line for studies of collision and laser induced dissociation of cold molecular ions.
